Tell the USCCBCondemn Catholic governors' cruel immigration stunts

Posted: Sept. 19, 2022

On Christmas Eve, roughly 130 migrants arrived in buses outside of Vice President Kamala Harris's home -- sent there by Texas Governor Greg Abbott on one of the coldest nights ever recorded in Washington, D.C.

These bus trips -- which have been occurring for months -- aren't about helping people in need with free trips: They're about hurting immigrants of color in order to mock Abbott's political opponents. So much for Christ-like love at Christmas.

It's not just Abbott. Earlier this year, Florida's Ron DeSantis tricked asylum seekers into boarding a plane to the island of Martha's Vineyard, MA -- leading them to believe that the flight was actually to Boston and cruelly promising them shelter and assistance that didn't exist. Arizona's Doug Ducey has likewise bused migrants to northern cities without any plan in place to greet or care for them.

Abbott, DeSantis, and Ducey have something else in common: All three say they're Catholic. Yet despite the fact Catholic social teaching is boldly pro-immigrant -- and despite routinely criticizing President Joe Biden -- the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops (USCCB) has not yet condemned Abbott, DeSantis, and Ducey for their cruelty.

Let's show the bishops that a nationwide movement of grassroots Catholics and other Christians wants them to join other faith leaders in denouncing the cruel governors who mistreat immigrants.
