Statement to the mediaChristians oppose Uganda's "kill the gays" law

Posted: June 7, 2023

Ugandan president Yoweri Museveni recently signed one of the most shocking, hateful, and harmful pieces of anti-LGBTQ legislation in the entire world -- and the American religious right played a key role in laying the groundwork for it.

Proponents of the Ugandan bill have tellingly nicknamed this new rule the "kill the gays" law, because it would punish queer people and their allies with long prison sentences -- and in some cases, even death.

American Christian fundamentalists like Focus on the Family, evangelical activist Scott Lively, and the Alliance Defending Freedom (ADF) have been building anti-LGBTQ sentiment in Africa for decades. Now, their work is paying off -- with devastating results.

Thankfully, many Christians are pushing back. Pope Francis denounced anti-LGBTQ laws like Uganda's as an "injustice," clearly stating that "homosexuality is not a crime." And global Anglican and Presbyterian leaders agreed.

All LGBTQ people are made in the image of God, period. Let's make it clear to the press and the public that we won't sit back while the global far right abuses our faith and their authority to punish people for loving who they love.
