Over the past few weeks, more than 20,000 Faithful America and UltraViolet members signed petitions to stand with Southern Baptist Convention (SBC) abuse survivor and activist Christa Brown, calling for key structural reforms within the denomination.
Now the results are in. The SBC has passed several initial reforms, including creating a database of abusers. Unfortunately, the changes stop far short of what leading reformers have called for, and still center churches rather than survivors.
As survivor and activist Hannah-Kate Williams said on Twitter, "I am thankful for anything that prevents abuse from happening in the future. But, until you make things right with those you've harmed in the past, you can't move forward in righteousness."
This is just the first step towards justice for SBC survivors. It's better than nothing, and that lets us feel some hope. We're also very grateful for the survivors, reformers, and advocates who made this happen and forced the SBC to finally begin the process of change.
Can you take a moment to tell Christa and all the survivors that you appreciate them today? Add your name to our thank-you letter now.
