Tell Rep. Greene's former pastorTell Marjorie Taylor Greene to embrace unity, not national divorce

Posted: Feb. 28, 2023

Self-proclaimed Christian nationalist Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene recently called for a "national divorce," advocating for the division of the United States into separate, hostile nations of supposedly red and blue states.

Her comments were met with shock, dismay, and disappointment from across the political world. But the person who should be the most horrified by Greene's twisted proposal is her former minister: the Rev. Andy Stanley of North Point Community Church in Georgia.

Greene was baptized in Stanley's congregation and attended church there for many years. But given her recent rhetoric, it would be fair to wonder whether she was listening during the sermons at all.

Pastor Stanley has a long history of preaching about the importance of Christian unity -- especially when it feels hard. He even authored a book about the intersection of politics and Christianity in 2022 entitled "Not in It to Win It: Why Choosing Sides Sidelines The Church."

Greene’s "national divorce" proposal runs contrary to everything Stanley teaches about love and unity. And it's far from the first time she has endorsed division and political violence -- in the past, she has posted threats against Democratic politicians on her social media feeds, used antisemitic language, and shown support for those who participated in the deadly January 6 insurrection.

As Pastor Stanley's siblings in Christ, let's ask him to use his public platform to denounce her toxic rhetoric and actions now.
