The recent mass shootings in Indiana, Georgia, Colorado, and elsewhere are just the latest heartbreaking examples of why America needs new gun safety laws.
Far too many of us are forced to live in fear -- or grieve for friends, family, and community members already lost to gun violence. We agree with the Rev. Dr. Jacqui Lewis, who says, "We have to stop prioritizing people's 'right' to own guns over people's right to not get shot."
Harvard studies show that background checks can help reduce gun violence -- yet one in five U.S. gun transactions still happen without such checks. Thankfully, the U.S. House just passed two life-saving bills to help fix this problem: H.R. 8, to ban firearms sales without a background check, and H.R. 1446, to close the "Charleston loophole" and give those background checks sufficient time.
The House has done its job. Now it's time for our senators to hear from their Christian constituents who value peace and life more than the NRA's culture of death.
