In a blow to freedom and families everywhere, the Southern Baptist Convention -- the country's largest Protestant denomination -- recently voted to oppose in-vitro fertilization (IVF) treatments.
The resolution, passed by a majority of the annual convention's representatives or "messengers," harmfully referred to aspects of IVF as "dehumanizing," claiming that "not all technological means of assisting human reproduction are equally God honoring or morally justified."
This cruel assault on those struggling with infertility comes at a moment when the far-right forces behind attacks on abortion rights are increasingly focusing on IVF and other forms of reproductive care. Senate Republicans just blocked a bill that would enshrine the right to IVF. And shortly before that, they blocked legislation that would protect access to contraception.
An overwhelming majority of people in America -- nearly 70% -- support IVF access, including most Christians. We can't afford to stay silent while religious-right pastors and politicians weaponize our faith to deny thousands of hopeful parents the reproductive care they need to start and grow their families. Add your name in support of access to IVF now.
(Faithful America is working with our friends at MoveOn and Faith Forward, who have identical statements to show the media broad multifaith support.)
