Breaking news: The Senate has passed cloture on the Respect for Marriage Act! With one more grassroots push, this important piece of pro-LGBTQ legislation could soon become law.
Once this bill receives final passage from the Senate and is signed into law by President Biden, it will repeal the so-called Defense of Marriage Act and require both the federal government and the states to legally recognize all marriage licenses, including same-sex marriages -- regardless of any future action by the courts.
Predictably, the religious right is lobbying hard to kill this vital civil-rights legislation, which would finally protect marriage equality from the Supreme Court's lurch towards theocracy. Tony Perkins recently sent an email to supporters of his hate group, the Family Research Council, calling the bill one of "the most dangerous and egregious bills ever introduced in Congress."
Meanwhile, San Francisco's Roman Catholic Archbishop Salvatore Cordileone has written to the Senate himself, absurdly claiming that protecting marriage rights for all would somehow "marginalize millions of reasonable and sincere people," when the exact opposite is true.
As usual, Perkins and Archbishop Cordileone are wrong -- and we need to make sure that our elected officials know that these outspoken religious-right voices doesn't speak for their Christian constituents on LGBTQ love and equality.
