Tell your senatorsProtect marriage equality now

The Senate is planning to vote on a crucial bill that would help protect LGBTQ rights and marriage equality from the Supreme Court's lurch towards theocracy -- but the religious right is lobbying hard to kill the legislation.

After the Respect for Marriage Act passed the House, evangelist Franklin Graham rallied his supporters against the Respect for Marriage Act, hatefully posting on Facebook that LGBTQ Americans are "evil and rebellious." Meanwhile, right-wing Archbishop Salvatore Cordileone wrote a letter to members of the Senate, absurdly claiming that protecting equal marriage rights would somehow "marginalize millions of reasonable and sincere people."

As usual, Graham and Archbishop Cordileone are wrong. The Supreme Court's recent attacks on religious freedom and bodily autonomy have made it crystal clear that they consider any rights they disagree with -- especially for marginalized communities -- to be fair game. Justice Clarence Thomas has even explicitly said so.

Thankfully, once the bipartisan Respect for Marriage Act is passed by the Senate and signed into law by President Biden, it will require both the federal government and the states to legally recognize all marriage licenses, including same-sex marriages -- regardless of any future action by the courts.

Most opposition to LGBTQ equality comes from religious-right leaders like Graham and Archbishop Cordileone. That means it's important that we take action for marriage equality now to show the Senate that their Christian constituents support love and dignity.
