Add your nameChristians condemn recent anti-Semitic hate crimes

Posted: Dec. 6, 2019

The day after Thanksgiving, the word "JEW" was carved into a door and swastikas were scrawled in red ink at a landmark D.C. synagogue. Then on December 28, five people were stabbed at a rabbi's Hanukkah party in Rockland County, NY.

Suspects have been arrested for both crimes -- but these aren't isolated incidents. All year long, we saw an alarming rise in anti-Semitic hate crimes and rhetoric:

  • Four people were killed in a targeted attack on a New Jersey kosher deli on December 10
  • Numerous Jewish people were assaulted on New York City streets with eggs, fists, and bricks
  • Right-wing Christian TV host Rick Wiles called impeachment a "Jew Coup"
  • Multiple worshipers were shot during Passover at a synagogue in Poway, CA

Academic studies confirm that President Trump's hateful rhetoric emboldens anti-Semitism -- and in 2016, counties that hosted Trump rallies saw a 226% increase in hate crimes. We can't stop the religious right from backing Trump in Jesus's name, but we can show that they do not speak for our faith by standing in solidarity with our Jewish neighbors against anti-Semitism.
