Pope Francis left behind a legacy of radical inclusion and compassion – and a roadmap towards a more Christ-like Church. His faithful leadership made him beloved by Catholics and non-Catholics alike.
But right now, a band of wealthy, ultra-conservative business leaders and conservative activists are dumping cash and clout into an effort to undo all the changes Pope Francis made.
On Wednesday, cardinals will begin a conclave to choose a new leader for 1.4 billion Catholics around the world. In preparation, far-right Catholic organizations like the Napa Institute are currently lavishing meals and gifts on cardinals in Rome in an attempt to sway their votes. Some have even gone so far as to fund opposition research and aggressive smear campaigns against the most progressive options.
With Christian nationalism on the rise globally, it is essential that Catholics have a leader who will combat hatred and fear, not lean into it. Let's show the cardinals that grassroots Catholics and ecumenical allies around the world want them to honor Pope Francis, not cave to those who want to take the Church backwards.
