We've made incredible progress protecting people against COVID-19 here in the United States, but for those who don't live in a wealthy superpower, the current situation is much more grim.
Fewer than 5% of people in low-income countries have gotten a COVID-19 vaccine so far. And unlike in the U.S., the problem is one of access, not hesitancy or refusal.
It doesn't have to be this way.
If successful vaccine manufacturers like Moderna waived their patents and shared their technology, we could ramp up production and close the global vaccine gap in no time. But right now, they're prioritizing their profits over protecting the vulnerable -- neglecting the poor and allowing new variants to form abroad.
President Biden has the power to direct Moderna and others to share their vaccine recipes right now using the Defense Production Act.
