Pope Francis says that health care is a human right, not a privilege. Sadly, four Catholic bishops in Kansas have completely missed that point.
The four bishops are refusing to support Medicaid expansion for thousands of low-income Kansans unless the state will amend its constitution to restrict abortion.
Whenever Jesus healed the sick, he never demanded a political quid-pro-quo first. No matter what someone may believe about abortion, it is simply not Christian to use access to affordable health care for the poor as a political bargaining chip.
Archbishop Naumann, Bishop Brungardt, Bishop Kemme, and Bishop Vincke could model Christ's example by helping expand live-saving Medicaid to 150,000 Kansans. Instead, they've chosen to throw their lot in with the state's right-wing politicians, which is why they need to hear from thousands of Catholics and other Christians across the country today.
