When Texas Governor Greg Abbott ordered child-welfare officials to investigate parents of transgender children for abuse, many major corporations condemned his hatred -- but not the beloved Texas grocery chain H-E-B.
H-E-B, the largest private employer in Texas, has so far remained silent about Abbott's hate despite the family business's Christian history and its new "Be the Change" diversity and inclusion initiative.
Founder Howard E. Butt, Sr., was a lay minister in the Southern Baptist Church. His son, the late H-E-B vice chairman Howard E. Butt, Jr., owned a Christian retreat center and preached alongside Billy Graham at revivals across the country.
The website Eater calls H-E-B "Texas's favorite store." It sells more groceries in the state than even Amazon and Walmart. With that kind of influence, if the Butt family speaks out, they could move the needle and put real pressure on Governor Greg Abbott.
Trans children are made in the image of God, and Abbott’s decision to deny them gender-affirming health care and prosecute their families is undeniable cruelty that no Christian should support. Let’s show H-E-B's billionaire CEO that Christians in Texas and across the country want him to do the right thing now.
