The Trump regime and the Republican-controlled Congress shut down the federal government indefinitely.
Let's be clear: This shutdown is the responsibility of the regime in power, which triggered it to harm vulnerable people and further a Christofascist agenda. But here at Faithful America, we believe there's more to the story than that.
This shutdown isn't simply about Republicans versus Democrats. It's about two different ways of defining what it means to be a country, a community, and ultimately, a Christian.
Over the coming days, we're going to see a lot of far-right Christian leaders -- including government officials -- cheering layoffs, defending dismantling the social safety net, and demanding that taxpayers fund the harassment, kidnapping, and detention of our neighbors. And they'll do it using language intended to convince the public that God is on their side.
As followers of Jesus -- who unceasingly stood with the poor and defenseless against the rich and the mighty -- we reject that framework in its entirety. And it's never been more essential for us to say so publicly.
Social-justice Christians need to stand up to Trump right now. But we also need to cut through the partisan back-and-forth and make a clear moral case that Christians are actually called to create a world where all people are safe, loved, and cared for.
Jesus wouldn't leave anyone behind, and neither will we. Tell Congress that Christians demand a funding bill that restores federal jobs and services without sacrificing immigrants, our health care system, or our democracy.
