Donald Trump has finally been indicted for conspiring to illegally overturn the 2020 election. These horrifying (if not surprising) charges against a once-and-potential-future president are a clear reminder of our democracy's fragility -- and of the importance of protecting it.
A functioning democracy reduces inequality, gives the most vulnerable a voice, and protects the God-given dignity of every voter. That makes it a critical tool for the Christian values of social justice and the common good -- which is why Donald Trump and his Christian-nationalist allies in Congress keep trying to undermine it.
Already this year, 16 states have passed legislation making it harder to vote. Congressional Republicans have even introduced a bill to push restrictive voter I.D. requirements, make mail-in voting more difficult, and make it easier for wealthy special interests to influence elections.
On the other hand, the Freedom to Vote Act -- which progressive lawmakers recently reintroduced in Congress -- would help by eliminating many of these new state-level anti-voter restrictions, improving ballot access, curbing partisan gerrymandering, and protecting our election system from potential threats.
At this pivotal moment for our democracy, let's make sure that the Senate knows that Christians support the Freedom to Vote Act.
