Liberty University's Falkirk Center -- named after Jerry Falwell, Jr., and called the "de facto headquarters of evangelical Trumpism" by the New York Times -- was a bad idea from the start.
The belligerent evangelical think tank is known for supporting Republican candidates, and only pledges to turn the other cheek in personal relationships -- never "on the cultural battlefield," a qualification Jesus wouldn't recognize.
Now Liberty is trying to hide its ties to the disgraced Falwell by changing the center's name to the "Standing for Freedom Center" -- but changing only the name when the mission itself is broken won't fix the problem.
Last year, the Falkirk Freedom Center spent heavily on ads supporting Trump and other Republicans. It hired some of the most hateful figures in Trump's orbit, including Sebastian Gorka and Eric Metaxas. It even promoted Trump lawyers Rudy Giuliani and Jenna Ellis, who spread the Big Lie about election results.
More than 400 Liberty students and alumni are calling on the school to shut down the center, not just change the branding. Let's show Liberty that Christians across the country stand behind these students and won't accept Trumpian behavior in our faith's name.
