EWTN wants you to think of it as the Catholic channel that airs traditional masses and rosaries -- but in truth, it has become the Fox News of American Catholicism.
The channel airs hours of major news programming -- and all of it is rooted firmly in right-wing bias. It's gotten so bad that Pope Francis just publicly called EWTN's mean-spirited attacks "the work of the devil."
EWTN and its reporters have conducted softball interviews with Donald Trump, fired Black hosts who champion racial justice, supported anti-LGBTQ organizations, promoted hydroxychloroquine as a cure for COVID-19, guest hosted for Fox's Laura Ingraham, and featured panels made up exclusively of the pope's harshest personal critics.
As a reporter for America: The Jesuit Review notes, "Can not the Catholic bishops' conference defend the pope on this?" But far from defending the current pope, the president of the U.S. bishops' conference actually sits on EWTN's board.
It's time for Los Angeles Archbishop José Gomez to stop letting misinformation and partisanship continue in the church's name. Let's make sure he knows that a nationwide movement of grassroots Catholics and other Christians want him to set aside the culture wars and quit the EWTN board now.
