Last week, we learned that a majority of Supreme Court justices are planning to repeal Roe v. Wade in the coming months. Since then, many of us have been feeling both heartbreak and righteous anger as we await the final decision in Dobbs v. Jackson.
But we can't lose sight of the fact that the ultimate responsibility for the fate of abortion access lies with Congress, not the Supreme Court. Our elected officials can still act, as they have for many other fundamental rights.
Codifying Roe into federal law would help vulnerable communities with the fewest resources. The House has already passed the Women's Health Protection Act. Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer says that the Senate will vote on a similar bill as early as Wednesday, May 11– and several key senators are still on the fence.
Justice Alito, the Court's ultraconservative majority, and its Christian nationalist backers don't get the last word. Our lawmakers need to hear from the 58% of American Christians who support abortion access today!
