To U.S. Catholic bishopsDon't support Donald Trump in 2024

Posted: Jan. 17, 2024

The 2024 election season is in full swing, and conservative Catholic bishops are at it again: boosting the Christofascist campaign of Donald Trump, disregarding the separation of church and state, and ignoring the interests of grassroots Catholics.

While bishops can't legally invoke their job or the church to endorse a candidate, more than a few of them have come as close to crossing that line as possible

In April, Bishop Robert Gruss of the Diocese of Saginaw, Michigan called President Biden a "stupid" Catholic "who is not living the life Jesus wants for him" during a talk on -- of all things -- Christian forgiveness. And Bishop Thomas Paprocki of the Diocese of Springfield, Illinois, baselessly accused President Joe Biden of "making a mockery of our Catholic faith" in May.

Pope Francis has been clear: Bishops should behave in a more pastoral way than this. The Gospels and our shared beliefs are also clear: Christian-nationalist politicians like Donald Trump and their vile, hate-based policies do not speak for us -- or for Jesus.

We need grassroots Catholics and other Christians to demand the bishops stop using their influence to meddle in the 2024 election now.
