Just days after President Joe Biden won the election, Pope Francis called him to offer congratulations, extend blessings, and find ways to work together on moral issues like climate change, poverty, and immigration.
Sadly, instead of following the Pope's lead, most U.S. Catholic bishops are taking a decidedly more partisan tone.
At the bishops' annual November meeting, conference president Archbishop José Gomez said Biden's pro-choice views somehow create "confusion among the faithful," posing a "difficult and complex situation" that requires study from a new committee -- then doubled down on his criticism on Inauguration Day. The conference was virtually never this critical of Trump.
Fortunately, there are still some bishops who want to set aside their differences and work with the Biden administration on shared social-justice priorities. Pope Francis has signaled that he is on their side, publicly saying the Catholic Church should not be "obsessed" with abortion and marriage.
Add your name to show that as the country faces a global pandemic, racial injustice, and runaway climate change, Christians and allies want the bishops to listen to Pope Francis and stop playing partisan games.
