Add your nameReinstate gay teacher fired during pandemic

Posted: May 6, 2020

The Archbishop of Cincinnati just fired a gay Catholic high school teacher for his marriage -- in the middle of an economic crisis and global pandemic that could make it extremely hard for him to find another job.

Instead of showing compassion, Archbishop Dennis Schnurr has directed Archbishop Alter High School in Kettering, Ohio, not to renew Jim Zimmerman’s contract. Making matters worse, Mr. Zimmermann -- who students call a “favorite” and who has taught at his alma mater for 23 years -- must finish out the year remotely due to pandemic closures.

Tragically, the first item listed in Alter’s "Core Belief Statements" is, "We believe in the God given dignity of each person." Nothing about firing someone for how they were born or for marrying the person they love respects dignity.

Students have launched a petition supporting Mr. Zimmerman. It’s up to grassroots Catholics and other Christians across the country to show Alter’s students that we stand behind them, and remind Archbishop Schnurr that LGBTQ persons have God-given dignity, too!
