Add your nameChristian leaders should not defend Donald Trump

As Donald Trump faces an impeachment inquiry into his abuses of power, the religious right is rushing to his defense.

On Fox News Sunday, Trump religious advisor Pastor Robert Jeffress dangerously proclaimed that removing the president from office "will cause a Civil War-like fracture in this nation." And when news about the whistleblower report first broke, Franklin Graham tweeted, "I wish President Trump's enemies would give it a rest."

Potential presidential abuses of power should not be taken lightly. Yet for the religious right, nothing seems to matter other than maintaining a cozy relationship with Donald Trump.

The Gospel's message of love is clear: When politicians abuse their power and harm their people, Christ's followers must side with the oppressed -- not with the tyrants.

Jeffress, Graham, and the religious right lost their way a long time ago. They now have the same symbiotic relationship with Donald Trump that the religious leaders of Jesus's time sought with brutal Roman rulers. Jesus challenged that political arrangement, and we must call it out again today.
