Tell Tennessee school districtsChristians reject arming teachers

Posted: May 10, 2024

School districts in Tennessee are deciding whether to allow teachers to carry guns, following the passage of a dangerous new law. As Christians, we must speak out now to keep guns out of our schools and protect our children.

Just over a year ago, a gunman shot and killed three students and three school staff at the Covenant School, a private Christian elementary school in Nashville, Tennessee.

Since then, Christian elected officials like Rep. Justin Jones, clergy and faith leaders, concerned parents, teachers, and gun control advocates have led waves of protests at the state capitol demanding new gun safety regulations.

But instead of listening to the people, the Republican majority in the legislature silenced protesters, even unjustly expelling two Black lawmakers including Jones -- leading more than 20,000 Faithful America members to call for the resignation of Tennessee Speaker Cameron Sexton.

And now, despite vocal opposition, right-wing legislators just strong-armed through a bill to arm teachers in public schools. Tennessee Governor Bill Lee promptly signed the bill into law.

Here's our opportunity: Individual school districts get to choose whether or not they will arm their teachers. Let's tell them that Christians want all of God's children to have safe schools -- which means no more guns in the classroom, period.
