Joe Biden, a famously devout Catholic, was denied Communion in South Carolina on Sunday.
Father Robert E. Morey of Saint Anthony Catholic Church in Florence said that Biden's support for abortion rights "places himself outside of Church teaching," which means that Biden is not "one with God, each other, and the Church."
Holy Communion is not a tool for punishing political opponents. We have seen this despicable behavior before, used by right-wing clergy to attack John Kerry and Tim Kaine. This election, with the stakes so high, we need to nip the hijacking of faith in the bud.
Fr. Morey was wrong, but there is still time for his bishop to do the right thing. It's up to us to let him know that everyday Catholics and other Christians across the nation are appalled when clergy play games with the Sacraments!
