Leonard Leo may not be a household name, but the Federalist Society leader's obsession with remaking the Supreme Court as a theocratic institution impacts every household in the nation.
His list of troublesome accomplishments is long: Leo masterminded the religious-right takeover of the Supreme Court, spent decades showering Justice Clarence Thomas with luxury vacations and other corrupt gifts, got a mysterious billionaire to leave him a fortune for right-wing activism, and made himself wealthy along the way.
As our friend, investigative journalist and author Katherine Stewart, has written: "Leo's primary conviction is that democracy will not deliver the kind of conservative values-based government that he believes America must have. He is therefore committed to building an oligarchy of the religious and the wealthy."
Yet according to news reports, the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops (USCCB) is a past and/or present client of Leo's consulting firm, CRC Advisors.
It's unclear what consulting services the bishops need from a partisan operative with ties to Christian nationalism. What is clear is that the bishops need to hear from a nationwide movement of grassroots Catholics and ecumenical friends who don't want to see any church associating the name of Jesus Christ with the corruption of democracy and the Supreme Court.
