Donald Trump and Elon Musk are gutting the Department of Education -- and Christian nationalists like Tony Perkins and Ryan Walters are cheering them on.
On March 6, Trump's new U.S. Secretary of Education, Linda McMahon, released a statement outlining the plan to dismantle the agency supporting the schools of more than 90% of the country's children. That evening, so-called DOGE head Elon Musk fired half of the Department of Education's staff.
Christian-nationalist leaders are raving about the move. The Family Research Council's Tony Perkins -- who gave us the absurd nickname "Faith-less America" last year -- said Trump's attacks could be a "game-changer" for efforts to "bring faith and the Bible back to public schools."
And Ryan Walters, head of Oklahoma's public school system and a 2024 False Prophet, cheered Trump and Musk's dismantling of the Department of Education as "a historic moment."
Dismantling the Department of Education is a play right out of the Project 2025 playbook -- and it's clear Christian nationalists want to take full advantage of it. But forcing Christianity on others doesn't spread our faith, it corrupts it.
Let's speak out as social-justice Christians and make it clear that we oppose this Christian-nationalist attack on our education system now.
