Instead of joining in protests and boycotts, the Washington National Cathedral is participating actively in the inauguration - sending a choir to sing "God Bless America" at the ceremony, and then hosting the president's post-inaugural prayer service.
Cathedral leaders have told the media that they will not use the occasion to challenge Donald Trump's hateful rhetoric or dangerous proposals. There won't even be any preaching at the prayer service, at Trump's request.
This is a moment of national crisis, not a time for following the usual traditions and protocols. Christian leaders should go beyond the usual prayers and act boldly to defend those whom Trump is attacking.
