President-elect Trump has invited Cardinal Timothy Dolan, the Catholic archbishop of New York, to offer a prayer at his inauguration ceremony.
During the election season, Cardinal Dolan expressed concern Trump's xenophobic rhetoric. Now, his appearance risks giving the impression that the church is offering its blessing to racism and authoritarianism - unless he uses the occasion to challenge Trump's rhetoric and proposals.
Christians believe that prayer can move mountains and change hearts, even Donald Trump's. But Cardinal Dolan's prayer must go beyond generic niceties; he should lead all of us in praying that the new president will turn away from hateful scapegoating.
