Pope Francis announced on Thursday a change to Catholic doctrine that declares the death penalty “inadmissible” in all cases. In the past, some conservative Catholics have argued that there is no conflict between church teaching and the death penalty––not anymore. Catholic judges and governors can no longer claim this doctrinal loophole to defend capital punishment.
There are still 31 states with death penalty statutes, and 18 states with Catholic governors. Pope Francis’ statement is a call to action and a critical moment in the fight to end the death penalty in America.
We support Pope Francis’ mission, declaring that state-sanctioned killing of individuals is an attack on human dignity and an immoral act of violence. Let’s join Pope Francis and show that American Christians are calling for an end to the death penalty.
