In a ministry career spanning almost six decades, Tony Campolo has become one of America's most influential evangelical preachers - speaking before countless audiences of thousands and even serving as a spiritual advisor to President Bill Clinton.
Yesterday, he announced, "I am finally ready to call for the full acceptance of Christian gay couples into the Church." And sure enough, he's already coming under attack from anti-gay leaders, one of whom has accused him of "apostasy" and "offending the Lord."
This kind of nasty backlash from the religious right is why so many evangelical leaders are reluctant to speak publicly in support of equality and inclusion. So we need to show just how many Christians are applauding Tony for his change of heart.
