Tell Southern Baptist leadersCondemn Falwell’s un-Christian remarks

Posted: Jan. 4, 2019

In a Washington Post interview this week, Jerry Falwell Jr., the president of Liberty University, said that a poor person never gave anyone a job or gave anybody charity “in any real volume.”

He argued that Jesus’ teachings should not be applied to public policy, finding it ridiculous to think that a nation should be “loving and forgiving” or should “help the poor.” In other words, Falwell is telling Christians that America shouldn’t follow the teachings of Jesus.

Liberty University is the largest Southern Baptist school in the nation, but so far Southern Baptist leaders have been silent in the face of Falwell’s blatant misreading of the Gospel. JD Greear, the convention’s president, and Russell Moore, the president of its public policy arm, have both said they want a more compassionate public image for their denomination - so why aren’t they speaking out?
