As your constituent and a person of deep religious faith, I call on you to ensure that the forthcoming $1 trillion coronavirus bill is a moral response to this global crisis -- one that prioritizes people, not profits.

We need you to increase health-care measures and protect the vulnerable, including America's health-care workers, seniors, the unemployed and uninsured, the homeless and incarcerated, low-income families and hourly workers, immigrants, and other vulnerable communities -- without establishing a corporate slush fund or allowing companies that receive funds to lay off employees, buy back stocks, or increase executive compensation.

Here are some of the specific, values-based actions your legislation must include to protect the most vulnerable, whom my faith calls me to love and support:

-- Free and expanded coronavirus testing and treatment for everyone in the United States, regardless of immigration status or other factors
-- Higher federal share (FMAP) for state Medicaid programs
-- Increased funding for hospitals
-- Non-exclusive licenses for vaccine/treatment
-- Passage of S. 3475/ HR 6139, the Health Care Worker Protection Act to mandate an Emergency Temporary OSHA Standard for frontline workers

-- Universal, permanent paid sick leave, including for gig-economy workers
-- Freeze on evictions, foreclosures, repossessions, and utility shutoffs; plus prohibitions on debt collection (including student loans and medical debt) and negative credit reporting
-- Expanded Unemployment Insurance
-- An end to work requirements on all federal benefits, including SNAP and Medicaid
-- An end to surprise billing

-- Monthly cash payments to individuals and families 
-- Increased and expanded access to nutrition assistance to prevent families and individuals from going hungry
-- Increased Social Security payments to seniors
-- Low-interest loans and/or grants to affected small businesses and self-employed workers, not just large corporations
-- Suspension of all immigration enforcement activities

-- Increased capacity and resources for tribal and indigenous communities, schools, elderly care facilities, and people with disabilities
-- A release of medically vulnerable incarcerated persons (including those who are elderly, immuno-compromised, pregnant, or sick) from prison, jail, and detention
-- A down payment on rebuilding a regenerative, clean-energy economy to ensure health and stability once this crisis ends
-- Require no-excuse absentee voting in federal elections, and provide funding for states to expand vote by mail, extend voting deadlines, expand online voter registration, and communicate extensively with voters about changes and other critical election information

The most vulnerable Americans need the most help. Thank you in advance for putting people above profits.
