The archbishop of New Jersey just released a memo demanding that his priests deny communion to Catholics “who publicly reject church teaching or discipline, either by public statements or by joining or supporting organizations which do so.”
Archbishop John Myers clearly wants to deny communion to anyone who supports marriage equality, but we're guessing he's not planning to do the same to oil-company executives or politicians who support unjust wars.
While Pope Francis leads the world’s bishops in discussing ways for the church to be more welcoming, Archbishop Myers is doubling down on exclusion. We need to let him know that the eucharist is not a tool for punishing your political opponents.
